Oil filter only at Kawi dealer?

It's time I do my 20hour maintenance and I'm wondering if I must buy the oil filter at the Kawi dealer, or if there is a suitable replacement at Kragen, or Napa, etc. ?

Been curious. Why not use the Kawi filter?

I have seen this discussion on the Rhino filter but I personally always use Yamaha's.

Cost?

No, purely convenience of getting to the dealer. Dealership is 30 miles away.

Here's a thread on these forums that lists compatible filters. I personally use Mobil 1 full synthetic oil & Mobil 1 filter.

I know nothing about oil filter design and always wondered was the filters different inside and cause a possible problem.

Getting filters is not a issue for me.

Its up to you but my opinion is.... if your taking it to the dealer and you want to keep your warranty in force, then why would you want to change what is required for the 20 hour service?? Go with the flow to keep your machine covered by the warranty. After the warranty is up, you can then do what you want!!

There are pretty large differences in the quality of filters and unfortunetly many of the "store" brands bid out the work and change vendors on a regular basis. One year the filter is good and the next it is garbage. You want a filter that uses steel end caps (not paper), steel inner core (not paper), coil steel spring (not pressed tab or leaf)...most quality filters also use a glass enhanced media to filter (10-12 microns of full flow filtering).

Basic rule of thumb is this:

OEM filters meet OEM specs, so your safe. Puralator, WIX, NAPA Gold, Amsoil, K&N are all good filters and are consistant.

You also do not need to use OEM oil and filters to retain your warranty. BUT you do need to use OEM spec oil (i.e. Kawi specs an SAE40 JASO MA/MA2 so you can use 0W-40, 10W-40, 30W-40 as long as it is JASO MA/MA2).

Hope this helps!

What always makes me think is on my Duramax, there are several oil filters that fit but they are not made for the high pressure of the diesel and can fail causing a blockage.

I just go with stock ones but like I said they are convenient for me to get.
