Listen to your belt

Hey Crew I was out at Gordon Wells and only after an hour of riding I heard a funny noise an shortly after the belt broke, had to flag someone down to tow me out of the dunes. Well I quess I need a new belt and a new Dalton clutch and cover.Thanks to Kenny at JSU for sending me a new kit and Brian at Unlimited for giving me his phone number.Now I need your guys help on setting the belt deflection for the new installed, I've read were Mr. Magellan had suggested to remove shims is this after the new belt has been broke in or when I put the new belt on? Plz crew I need all your knowledge sent this way to complete this. Thanks agian I'm having a great time with all the post and new things to do to the Teryx.Thanks Roman

My suggestion would to be to put the clutch kit in, install the new belt ( you should be able to do this without removing the driven pulley ) check the deflection and go from there.
Chances are with the new belt, it will be in specs, you'll probably have to run it awhile to stretch the belt.

Here is what I have found with my own machine.

If you run the EPI HD Belt like Hunterworks sells, take out the thin shim from the driven pulley. It will run like this for a long time, I went back to the factory Kawasaki belt after 69 hours on the EPI when I installed my Dalton Clutch Kit. At 69 hours, the EPI belt was doing great.

The new Kawasaki belt I still left out hte thin shim and now after 49.7 hours it is to loose and I need to put back the thin and remove the thick shim. I am probably going to put the new EPI belt I have here on hand on and leave it with the thin shim out.

I learned from Stakk that if you go ahead and start out withthe thin shim out you save yourself an extra time tearing the machine apart to adjust the belt deflection at 20 hours after it has had time to stretch. I agree Stakk, great advice, I wish you were still around here more.

Also to note that the EPI will be a little tight for the first about 20 hours and will squeel if you idle with the machine in gear. I get in the habit of taking the machine out of gear when I stop. This squeel and tightness will go away as the belt breaks in and stretches. With the Kawa belt, I found it to only squeel the first couple of hours and it is definitely seems to stretch more and mine is now out of specs I can easily tell by listening.

I am stil trying to figure out how to reach zen with belt and shim choices. Plus belt maintenance is a good time to adjust my fly weights on my Dalton Clutch just because I can...

The bad thing is sometime you not only get a belt squeal, but will actually get creeping, with, on the teryx is harder to tell because of the weight. I learned the hard way that really to do it right, you have to mike the shims and have a variety to get it right.
It sucks because of the time it takes to get to the converter on the Teryx, but to run the deflection too tight right from the get go can smoke a new belt, no matter who's it is.
On my Prairie, I can't tell you how many different springs, weights and belts I went through to get what I consider right for me.
I guess what I'm getting at is there is no magic setting for everybody, and its basically a trial and error type deal, it sounds like the Dalton kit will you get as close to being right the first time, but I'm sure you will still have to fine tune.

Thanks guys for the speedy response and great info, now another question for you how did you guys that have the Dalton clutch cover disconnect the engine brake feature?

Hey CREW HERE ARE SOME PICS OF THE KEBC SYSTEM IN THE instruction it says to take the fork off of the kebc system to disengage the engine brake. Does that mean take out the whole mechanical system or a pieces of it? Any info would be great because this its the only left for me to do before I can begin to assemble this project back up.

Hey Crew here is another pic of the new belt with the Dalton cover and springs and clutch kit installed. My question is I just put it all back together and the belt seems a little loose will it tighten when the motor turns on, am I just worrying to much about it.

What type of noise was it making? Every once in a while a get a faint squeal when first pushing on the gas. Any ideas? Belt probably needs adjustment I guess. I have about 50 hours on mine and have done the deflection.

Glamis Rob it was a clunk sound and it was jerkie when I took off from a stop, I had 36 hours on it and never checked the deflection.
