OK uys I just found an Bushmaster AR15 lower reciever that I bought in 1999 and packed away and never touched. Anyway I remember back in 99 or 2000 having to send DOJ a check to reregister or something stupid and they were supposed to send me a letter of approval or rejection and I dont remember getting either. I guess I dont know if I should start to build it since it has tthe push button magazine release. I would hate to get rolled up on and get it impounded and be out my money. Or maybe i should just send it off to a bro in AZ. Thanks for any imput you may have

Not a specialist, however, I was not aware they had any AR 15's without a push button release for the mag. Your best bet would be to check with the local authorities, or contact the local ATF. I believe that weapon is banned in California, thus the need for the DOJ approval. I am out here in AZ and have a Colt M4...never have had any issues, however, we are a lot different out here when it comes to "assault weapons"

Yea I am a little apprehensive of contacting the DOJ in case they try to confiscate it. Maybe its just easier to start from scratch on a new one and send it out there to AZ. Should just move out there, your states on the right track. FYI I guess on the new ones or maybe Ca modles theres no push button Mag release it uses some type of key or pin. Stupid huh

Well technically you need to ship a firearm from one FFA licensed individual to another, therefore, not sure what would happen if you take it to a FFA licensed individual in California.

Never heard of that different mag release...interesting!

efajeep...

If you regiestered your lower receiver under the assault weapon act, then you should have received some papaerwok back stating that you own a regerstered assault weapon.

Receivers are banned by name. Most Bushmaster receivers are listed, BUT a couple arent. If you have the registration papers, then build that sucker up with as many features possible! Pistol grip, flash hider, collapsable stock and hi cap magazines! No limit!

IF you dont have registration paperwork AND your reveiver is listed by CADOJ to be banned, then you must not take that thing out of the house (unless out of CA).

Now, You can still build a CA legal AR. Youll need a "OLL" Off-List Receiver. All AR receivers have a push button magazine release, but to make them CA compliant, you must run a RADDLOCK or a Prince50 "bullet button" lock in place. This mechanism locks the magazine in place and requires a tool to remove the magazine. Basically, it wont let you remove the magazine with your finger, because the hole where the button is at is too small. Most will use the tip of a bullet to release the mag, hence "bullet button". Its quite simple really. Its doesnt nueter the receiverMain thing is to see which lower you have.
If its listed as banned then you must...
Have registration papers issued pre 2000.
If you dont have papers, then get it out of CA.

Shipping a rifle or lower receiver.
When shipping a rifle/shotgun (fully functional OR lower receiver from an AR -part that has the serial number) you may do so but must go thru FedEx or UPS, NOT the USPS)
For rifles and lower receivers, YOU may ship to a FFL direct. YOU DO NOT need to send it from a FFL. Best to send it 2nd day, but not ground. Overnight will kill you on cost.

Shipping a pistol.
All pistols/revolvers or frames containing serial numbers must go FROM FFL to FFL. Also, before you ship a pistol to someone IN CA, make sure that pistol is on the CADOJ safety roster. If its not, then it must be sold only in a PPT (private party transfer) where both the buyer and seller meet at the same FFL location to do the transfer.
You may ship an off-roster pistol anywhere in CA, but unless the buyer is a FFL holder OR law enforcement officer, then the FFL can not release the pistol.

Whenever you ship a firearm, youre not sending it to the buyer via the FFL. Basically, the FFL receives the firearm, then logs it in as his inventory. So, the buyer is basically buying it from the FFL without the money transfer. The money is sent to the seller before shipping.

Excellent post my friend, in addition, thank you for correcting me on the FFL shipping. I thought lowers had to go, but evidently they do not.

Thanks!

Damn Marcello I was waiting for you to chime in, you know your shit. I do not have any paperwork whatsoever. Its been put away so long I had totally forgot that I bought it. I will have to verify what model I have and contact you since Im still confused on this crap. I think I paid 3-400 for it back in the day that would really suck if I have to get rid of it.

Hey DP, thanks. Some receiving FFLs are a little sketchy and per their own request, they may require to have the firearm sent from a FFL, but its not legally required. Hell, its not even LEGALLY required to send pistols/revolvers from one FFL to another, but most FFLs require this. You just cant send any firearm directly to the buyer (non-FFL)... ofcourse.

When/if you do ship ANYTHING to ANY FFL, ask for a copy of the FFLs license and a copy of the buyers ID/License for your own records. Always get insurence and a tracking number and require a signature whenever you ship something.

Hey efajeep, I wouldnt say that I know it all, but I have done quite a few transactions with private party sellers as well as FFL/dealers to kinda know my way around.
SO IF I UNDERSTAND YOU CORRECTLY, YOU HAVE A PRE-BAN CA LISTED RECEIVER THATS PUT AWAY IN A SAFE AT YOUR BROS HOUSE OUTSIDE OF CALIFORNIA THAT YOURE INERESTED IN BRINGING BACK TO CALI TO BUILD IF YOU CAN LEGALLY DO SO... RIGHT.

Just to clear things up because this is a public forum and it'd be a real bitch if you self incriminate yourself. ;) You never know who's watchin. LOL

Hit me up with the details on what you got. If you spent that much for it, then it shouldnt be a stripped receiver (no internals, trigger assembly, parts kit). For that price, it should be built (internals, trigger, etc. already installed)

CA legal stripped lower receivers are available now for about 100-150 bucks. Bullet buttons are about $25. The rest are all considered parts and have no restrictions on buying parts, stocks, and barrels and what not. You can have these items shipped directly to your door. I usually buy online and save!
When building a CA compliant rifle, make sure the magazines WILL NOT hold more than 10 rounds. Doing so, will constitute your CA legal are into a felony assault weapon... lame I know:mad:

Hit me up if you need anything.
