I will be having a 30" LED lightbar mounted on my cage and another 10" LED lightbar mounted on my bumper, what do all of you think in regards to the battery? Upgrade to an Optima, keep the factory one, or must run two?
I guess I am wondering if anyone what kind of power is available on the stock electrical system. It would be nice to know before you just keep adding stuff till you began having problems. I know the rule of thumb always has been 13.8 to 14.6 V while charging on any 12V system. I guess if you were just monitor the voltage level till the nominal voltage starts to drop you would know what is to much! Some of the big boomer audio systems today will kill a V8 without a second battery and a massive alternator.
Anyway I always like to have the actual spec's......
We have been down this road plenty times, take a look at this tech article I wrote but be ready it is a little out of the box thinking but I checked my theory out with the owner of a battery company I know and a electrical engineer too.
Any constant draw item like lights I would go smaller or stock battery. Batteries use a good portion of your charging capacity to charge, it is just like a light or winch or what ever.
As far as I know, no one makes a HO for the Teryx. Alternators are a bad idea too, they don't last long in dirt, mud and water.
I spoke to Kawasaki the other day and the rumor is they are going to be releasing a high output alternator. To Todds point though...alternators especially do not like mud.
I'm running the Optima battery.. 925c I think is the number (it is specified for a rhino).. It will fit in the stock location but you do need to buy longer battery straps at your local automotive store.. I have 4 HID's & an LED whip, Vapor dash. and the VDI from Todd at Hunterworks. I-Pod stereo going in shortly... I have not had any cranking or dead battery issues yet.
Ok, I'm new to the side x side world, so excersize some patience with me....
In your opinions; if I were only going to run two sets of off road lights (never on at the same time- and not HID's) and maybe a reverse light. and maybe add a horn.... I should be ok with the stock battery? Secondly, if I were to have some minor charging issues, would I address with the battery upgrade to an optima?
Hey there my friend, currently I run a 40" LED lightbar, HID headlights, two HID lights, and a stereo all on the stock battery. Granted I do not run them all at once, nor do I run them all while not running. The nice thing is the charging system on the Teryx is great than that of the Rhino, however, there is a point where it is just too much.
In my opinion, and keep in mind I am not an electrical expert, however, to run what you have described does not appear that it would be an issue.
I have to agree with what you plan on running I think you are fine. Now when you decide to add a winch, big stereo, etc that is when it becomes a problem. Also welcome to the site.
Thanks for the welcome, and thanks for the assistance. I'm going to get right to work on wiring those lights! Did you all wire up an alternate fuse block or straight to the battery with linked fuses?
Called Ricky Stator and found out they have no higher output stator yet. I have a stock teryx and i am having four 4" fuego halogen lights installed. Question- Will i run ok with all the stock electrial items plus 4 halogens and a hid whip??
