So someone forgot to oil the air filter when it was cleaned and now the engine seems to be burning through oil pretty fast.

Any recommendations for a plan forward to mitigate potential issues or am I in a situation where all I can do is fill up the oil more frequently and wait for the engine to give up?

Hard to say just depends on how much damage is already occured.

I can tell you sometimes you just have to suck it up and go internal and there is no way I would not just pull it, split the case and put new rod bearings in now before the damage continues to the point of taking the crank out. Lots cheaper putting rod bearings in than a crank and rods plus if in the process of a rod bearing going out it actually clung the rod out which is rare it will take the case out.

If you are going in I recommend the following

new aftermarket valves stock one deface 100% of the time
new aftermarket valve springs
Check cylinders for scarring if reusable then
hone cylinders with a ball hone lightly
put new rings in
put new crank bearings in
depending on miles new cam chains and oil pump chain

FYI, we offer ship in engine, repair and ship back out.

This repair is looking quite expensive. First find the guy that didn't oil the filter and ask him to get you a new machine!
If your using a quart of oil say every 10 hrs or so why not just stay with it; especially if the guy that same guy is still borrowing your machine!
I don't know the answer but would a heavier oil say 20-50 work, maybe stop using expensive synthetic oil, maybe there are some additives that might work i.e. STP.

If you are going to rebuild, you might as well hot rod it with better pistons and cams at the same time.

air filter oil

Ty,
Not that I'm an expert by any means, but felt someone should answer you...The air filters on Teryx (I think all UTV's) are bathed in oil before installing them. Collects the dust/debris a lot better. If you run in dusty, sandy soil, you'll want to catch all the dust you can. I primarily use mine with tracks to access back country skiing in the winter, so maybe not as big a deal...My manual clearly states to do it with oil, so I do. I know there's a couple of threads discussing this somewhere in here.
Good luck
~Pete:)
