Modern helmets have come a long way since the start of World War I when they were invented. At the beginning of the last century, machines start to become faster and faster resulting in many serious injuries, so the need for protection was obvious. Prototype helmets were made of thick pieces of leather and offered very insignificant protection from impact and abrasion. One of the British neurosurgeons, seeing the surge of rider head injuries came up with a brilliant idea of a hard shell helmet that was meant to prevent penetration in a collision.

You can learn more about the history of a riding helmet, the types of tests performed to make sure that each of the helmet models can provide the needed level of protection, and what are the differences between DOT, ECE, SHARP, and SNELL helmet certifications, by reading our article written by an SAE certified mechanic and technical writer Michael Grayen.
