does the teryx have a crankshaft problem?i have had 4 different kawasaki v twins quads and teryx and have never had no problem..i am debating on doing the fst 840 kit on my 08 teryx and after visiting my dealer yesterday im not sure.they have 3 teryxs there and all 3 have broke cranks..all had oil on the dipstick and none were swamped..they claimed that it was due to dirty airfilters???!!anyways after seeing that...im kinda leary on spending 3 grand on mine and then have a crank go out.all had stock exhaust with dynatech cdi and no jetting.any problems elsewhere in usa?

first i've heard of "broken cranks" i locked my crank up from low oil. i've also heard of guys ruining there rings from dirty air filters. sound like kawi is just using the filter as a way to cop out of warranty repair on those bikes

Don't believe everything you hear...

Its not hard to lock one up and realize it was low on oil and add some to it then take it to the dealership and have it covered under warranty. I know I had a friend do it.

Then again this wouldn't happen if it wasn't for the crappy seals kawasaki uses.

Rear Engine Seal???

I haven't heard of any cranks going either and as for the air filter being the problem for the crank going? WTF??? I don't think in all my years of being in the automotive trade that I have heard of that, especially the crank breaking. Engine dusted - Yes, crank breaking - NO!
My guess for what "Shan" is saying about the crappy Kawi seals is probably the rear engine seal was leaking, customer didn't know and probably didn't check the oil as often as should have, ran low and then snap... only a guess. Had mine replaced around 40 hours. Would be curious to see what Kawi says about the cranks and about warranty.

There isn't a problem with the cranks other then they are a flat brg. instead of a needle brg, we find in most quads or off road motorcycles. When you put a CDI on these they blow oil into the air box and run them low on oil. It don't take much to stick a brg. in these, and it happens fast. I rebuild more Brute force's because the sink them, more Teryx's because they run them wide open more then the quad guys do. The biggest and best fix for the Teryx is doing my YFZ mod. This is a motor beathing mod to reroute the oil from blowing into the air box into the YFZ catch can. Then that is made to drain the oil back into the motor again. All this info is in the kits I sell. If you need more info, just ask.

Low oil level (due to oil blowing up into the air plenum, rear seal leaking, or just plain running low, etc.) is the MAIN cause of the crank/rod bearing failure. Keep it up and use synthetic oil. $15 is a cheap insurance comparing to $1500+ repair.

Sucking in dirt into the engine mainly causes top end wear problem, but it doesn't help either when crank is running low on oil. So, make sure your filter is clean and properly prepped before riding. Or have a spare prepped clean air filter in a ziploc bag. Again, that might be a hassle to some of you but a cheap insurance, and way cheaper than a top end job.
