Am troubleshooting a problem with the wife's machine and need some input.

2008 Teryx with 18 hrs. Noticed power loss last time I got in it. Feels like I'm giving it half throttle with the pedal to the floor. I checked the linkages, drained the carbs, checked the fuel filter, checked/cleaned plugs (dark and slightly sooty). Idles fine (on both or either cylinder if one wire is pulled). With the intake off, the vacuum pistons don't pull in at all even when I restrict the carb intakes. Sounds like slight backfires out the carbs (not loud but noticable).

I'm thinking CDI/Ignition timing issue ... am I heading in the right direction??

Sounds like you have a loss of vacuum somewhere, the slides should open all the way under full throttle in neutral.
Where would a vacuum loss occur? Unless I'm mistaken, there is only one vacuum line taken off each cylinder's intake. One for the fuel pump and one for the 4x4 actuator. These have been checked. My first thought was a vacuum leak so all the boots and tubing was checked and tightened.

I was going under the premise that the vacuum pistons were a symptom of the problem caused by the CDI malfunctioning and not allowing the machine to ramp up to a high enough rpm to build enough manifold vacuum for the carbs. I'm looking for something common that would affect both cylinders and at the same point in time.

The only other common point I can see that would cause this is the main timing chain jumping resulting in both cylinders intake valves out of time. This leads to another question - would the engine continue to run relatively nicely up through about half throttle with a timing jump??

I'll check the ignition timing tonight with a timing light per the service manual, but any other hints would be welcome as my head's starting to hurt.

Might want to check valve adjustment while you're at it, mine were off BADD after about 20 hours, sounds a lot like what you described. I would think with a chain jump you woud have more problems??

Pulled out the timing plug to check timing and was greeted with more blowby out of the crankcase than out of the exhaust pipe.

On another note, I'd like to meet the engineer who stated "It's OK, we'll just use several thousand plastic rivets."

Push the vacuum slides with your finger and make sure they're still sealed... If the slides aren't moving at all when you hit the gas then your problem is going to reside there.
